Family Support Services (FSS) provides a coordinated system of public and private supports, services, resources, and assistance to maintain and enhance the quality of life for youth with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD) and their families. These services are designed to strengthen and promote families providing care at home.

The main FSS service relevant for Hopes Promise Respite is Respite Care, which provides temporary relief for primary caregivers from the demands of caring for a child with disabilities. This includes:

  • Agency Hired Respite
Respite workers are recruited, trained, and employed by an agency to provide social/recreational experiences in or out of the home. Limited to 90 hours per 90-day authorization.
  • Self-Hired Respite
Families recruit their own respite workers and are reimbursed. Household members can serve as self-hired respite (except immediate caregivers). Also limited to 90 hours per 90-day authorization.
  • Agency After School Care and Agency Weekend Recreation
Programs that provide social/recreational experiences outside the home.
  • Overnight Respite
Allows the child to stay overnight in a licensed facility, up to 14 days in a 351-day period.

Hopes Promise Respite can highlight its ability to provide these various respite care options to support families caring for youth with I/DD in the community.
